Sumac Bushes director’s chair started. Back and seat of 47H x 22W x 16D inches acrylics on canvas, will be varnished. Up-cycled tall wood director’s chair, work in progress, functional art. The wood will be painted a cherry color.

I like that it’s useful (and refurbished — keeping stuff out of landfills!!!) as well as beautiful. Can’t wait to see the whole thing finished….

Hi Virginia and Karen, thanks for commenting! You both bring up the issue of practicality vs. aesthetics. It’s hoped that each of these refurbished chairs will not compromise on either one, because as far as furniture is concerned, design must be practical and useful but there is no reason it can’t be pleasing visually as well. In my opinion if we can’t touch Art or use Art because we think it is too valuable, then it’s not fully accomplishing what it was created for…but I’m among those who are scolded for automatically reaching out to touch things in National Galleries, so don’t quote me…because I also “get” the value thing. It’s just that looks aren’t everything. At least that’s part of the intention in my work as a whole.
