Bald Eagles

Bald Eagles, 18H x 24W inches soft pastels on paper
Bald Eagles, juvenile watching mature in flight at Oceanside, OR. 18H x 24W inches soft pastels on paper. Framed size 27H x 33W inches.
Thumbnails show stages 1 through 4. Soft pastels don’t allow for too many changes, so the work had to be sprayed and set well before carefully making the juvenile eagle smaller to create a more convincible perspective. That also forced me to rework the sky and clouds, so now hoping those lines help with perspective.

Asters, 18H x 24W inches soft pastels on paper

Asters, 18H x 24W inches soft pastels on paper. I usually take photos outdoors, and like the previous drawing, it’s been difficult to get a decent photo of the piece as a whole. Details are best viewed in the following thumbnails 1. upper left, 2. upper right, 3. center, 4. lower left, 5. lower right:

The Terracotta Army, Xi'an, China - 18H x 24W inches graphite, soft pastel on paper - work in progress

The Terracotta Army, Xi’an, China – 18H x 24W inches graphite, soft pastel on paper – work in progress. We visited China in 2016 so this is done from my own photos. The drawing looked boring so I added some stylized traditional Chinese characters that translate the title, “Terracotta Army”.  Some tones and details need a bit more work. Here’s a link to Wikipedia with info about the sculptures.

Renewal: Mt. St. Helens, 18H x 24W inches soft pastel on 140 lb cold pressed
Renewal: Mt. St. Helens, work in progress. Painters tape keeps the edges white, allowing room for framing.Renewal: Mt. St. Helens, WA with Indian Paintbrush wildflowers. 18H x 24W inches soft pastel on 140 lb cold pressed.

Left image shows work as it began. Painter’s tape is used on every work on paper to keep edges clean and allow room for mat and framing. Workable fixative sprayed at various phases really brings out colors, deters unwanted blur of colors while working, plus renews the surface to fix up or brighten areas that have become dark or slippery from too much buildup.
