The Grape Hyacinth started blooming this week…next the Iris, and I can’t wait to see the Ornamental Onions again.

Mockingbird

Mockingbird - Lewisville, Texas

This week mating season has started for Mockingbirds in northeast Texas. Mockingbirds mimic over 120 bird calls, and I’m guessing there are a couple of frog calls in the mix too. Really interesting, and a sound I love hearing when outside doing yardwork.

The Fort Worth Zoo has the best amphibian displays. Visiting a zoo or botanical park can do wonders to lift the Winter Blues!

What Oak leaves do in January

During the Christmas season the Oak leaves on the tree in our front yard were bright orange-red, and have only dropped during the past two days, whereas other years they would have fallen mid-December. While raking yesterday, the proudest of all begged for portraits!

Almost every evening year-round I’m drawn outdoors by the change in lighting, just before sunset. Called Mackerel Sky, stripes and mottled cloud formations like this precede a cold front, and occur during any time of day, but are most dramatic during sunrise and sunset.
